Alphabet
is introducing a new conversational artificial-intelligence service to some testers and plans to launch it to the public in the coming weeks, according to a blog post by
Alphabet
(ticker: GOOGL) CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday.
“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models,” Pichai wrote.
ChatGPT has been criticized for its lack of accuracy and inability to talk about recent events. Pichai pointedly said Google’s Bard would focus on doing better in those two areas.
Bard “draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses,” he wrote.
Pichai said the service will be released initially with a “lightweight model version” of LaMDA [Language Model for Dialogue Applications], which uses less computing power and would enable a broader rollout. He also said Google plans to launch new AI-powered features for its search engine soon.
Google’s announcement comes after conversational AI chatbot ChatGPT was released by start-up OpenAI late last year and has captivated the internet with its responses. Last month,
Microsoft
(
MSFT
) agreed to expand its OpenAI partnership with a new multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment in the company. The software giant also vowed to use OpenAI technology across its consumer and enterprise products.
