Director James Cameron has revealed that he has started writing a new Terminator movie…but wants to see how the real world reacts to the emergence of artificial intelligence before finishing it. Appearing at the Dell Technologies World 2023 event, a few people who were in attendance have revealed that Cameron is working on a new Terminator outing, but is “holding off on finishing it until the direction of #AI becomes clearer.”
After creating one of the most iconic sci-fi action outings in The Terminator way back in 1984 before crafting one of the greatest sequels of all time in 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Cameron largely stepped away from the franchise until returning as a producer on the most recent sixth installment, Terminator: Dark Fate.
Released in 2019, Terminator: Dark Fate brings back both Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger and ignores the events of the third, fourth, and fifth movies. Production was sullied by creative disagreements between Cameron and director Tim Miller, with Terminator: Dark Fate receiving mixed reviews and becoming one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time.
Clearly, Cameron wants to right the ship, and seemingly feels that the best way to do this is to see how real-life AI affects the world around us and build upon that. Time will tell whether this is the best approach, but the idea of James Cameron being back at the helm of The Terminator franchise is more than exciting enough for now.
Arnold Schwarzenegger Is Done With The Terminator Franchise
Should Cameron decide that the real world can be rightly reflected in whatever he has planned for The Terminator franchise, and thus turn his hand to crafting another installment, it doesn’t sound like central star Arnold Schwarzenegger will be appearing. The action superstar recently declared that he is “done” with the world of the Terminator saying, “The franchise is not done. I’m done. I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to The Terminator. Someone has to come up with a great idea.”
Of course, the actor is still hugely grateful for the character and how it kick started his career. “The Terminator was largely responsible for my success, so I always would look at it very fondly,” he added. “The first three movies were great. Number four [Salvation] I was not in because I was governor. Then five [Genisys] and six [Dark Fate] didn’t close the deal as far as I’m concerned. We knew that ahead of time because they were just not well written.”
As for James Cameron, he is currently busy with the ongoing, record-breaking Avatar franchise. Recent sequel Avatar: The Way of Water has now grossed over $2 billion worldwide, with Avatar 3 set to further explore the world of Pandora when it lands in theaters on December 20, 2024. A fourth and fifth outing will follow on December 18, 2026 and December 22, 2028, respectively.
